Century 21 spent an estimated $3.5 million – or $117,000 per second of air time for its Super Bowl ad on Sunday. The result? Meh.

I admit I was skeptical when I heard C-21 was going with a Super Bowl commercial. After all, the company had sworn off TV advertising fairly recently, instead claiming it was better to focus on the Internet. Perhaps they should have as a USA Today panel of consumers ranked the commercial second-to-last. The Wall Street Journal grouped it with a handful of “spots that fell flat,” based on the thoughts of advertising experts.

We all know that a Super Bowl commercial has to be killer since there are so many other awesome commercials that air during the game. So, instead of that money being spent on Super Bowl Sunday, what would it buy another time?

- On a National level you could purchase about 32 thirty second spots.
- On a local level in a top 20 market (Los Angeles, Denver, DC, Philly among others) you could buy over 3,000 thirty second TV spots in highly rated programming.

To put it into perspective, you could run a healthy local TV schedule for a good 12-15 months with a $3 million dollar budget.

I like the RE/MAX approach: spread the ad fund over multiple media channels over the course of a year. You get more impressions and your brand is not lost in the shuffle or picked on the day after the big game.

Air Canada, Becel and Campbell’s are among the country’s most trusted brands, according to Reader’s Digest Canada’s second annual poll.

The magazine commissioned Harris/Decima to conduct 1,500 online surveys among a random sample of its panel members. The survey was conducted between October 2 – 15, 2009.

The survey focused on three areas: which brands survey participants trusted most in each brand category, drivers of brand reputation and the impact of Readers Digest’s Trusted Brand seal.

Consumers picked the brands they trust the most in 28 different categories including allergy relief, credit card, gas retailer and ground coffee, and ultimately selected this year’s winners.

They are:

• Air Canada (Airline)

• Claritin (Allergy Relief)

• RBC Royal Bank AND TD Canada Trust (Bank/Credit Union)

• Duracell (Batteries)

• Kellogg’s (Breakfast Cereal)

• Buckley’s (Cough/Cold Remedies)

• Visa (Credit Card)

• Canon (Digital Camera)

• Secret (Female Deodorant)

• Robin Hood (Flour)

• Gas Retailer ESSO

• Maxwell House (Ground Coffee)

• Sony (Home Entertainment)

• Best Western and Holiday Inn (Hotel Chain)

• Breyers and Chapman’s (Ice Cream)

• Sun Life (Life Insurance)

• Old Spice (Male Deodorant)

• Becel (Margarine)

• BlackBerry (Mobile Devices)

• Apple (Mobile Entertainment)

• Toyota (Passenger Car manufacturer)

• Iams (Pet Food)

• Ford (Cough/Cold Remedies)

• RE/MAX (Residential Realtor)

• Campbell’s (Soup)

• Pepto-Bismol (Stomach Ailment Remedy)

• Coppertone (Sunscreen Skin Protection)

• Ford and Toyota (SUV Manufacturer)

Reader’s Digest increased the number of product categories from 18 to 28 this year to include breakfast cereal, coffee, hotel chains and residential realtors. The decision was based upon the success of last year’s poll and to fall in line with the magazine’s Trusted Brands program in Europe, Asia, Australia and South America, said Larry Thomas, Toronto-based vice-president and publisher for Reader’s Digest Canada.

Winners are entitled to use the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand seal on its packaging and advertising, said Thomas.

According to the survey, 49% of Canadians would trust a product more if it had the Trusted Brand seal, and 44% say they’re more likely to purchase a product if it has the seal.

The results are featured in the May 2010 issues of Reader’s Digest and Sélection du Reader’s Digest as well as on ReadersDigest.ca and Selection.ca.

BusinessWeek has named Dave Liniger, RE/MAX International Chairman and Co-Founder, among the 50 Most Powerful People in Real Estate. The list appeared in the March 23 edition of the magazine.

Leaders from various industries such as government, lending, insurance, investment, construction and real estate, made the list. Liniger is included with heavy hitters such as U.S. President Barack Obama, U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, FHA Commissioner Dave Stevens and others.

Liniger was among just two leaders from real estate brokerages who were featured on the list (the other was the Realogy CEO). Liniger was lauded for encouraging more than 10,000 RE/MAX agents to earn the Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE) designation in 2009. He also played an integral role in lobbying government leaders to create legislative policies aimed specifically at extending the Homebuyer Tax Credit and streamlining Short Sales.

Congratulations RE/MAX Affiliates!

It is with great pleasure that we announce that RE/MAX agents and offices have reached an astounding $100 million in donations to Children’s Miracle Network. This is an accomplishment that every RE/MAX Affiliate can take pride in.

A sponsor since 1992, RE/MAX stands as one of only three companies to reach this milestone for Children’s Miracle Network. Because of you, thousands of children each year receive life-changing and lifesaving care at more than 170 participating Children’s Hospitals.

There will be a formal announcement of the $100 million milestone at the Opening General Session at the 2010 RE/MAX International Convention. We kindly ask that you delay promoting this news until the official announcement has been made. RE/MAX International and Children’s Miracle Network will send press releases to the appropriate media outlets to make the announcement.

Children’s Miracle Network has created a website that offers marketing resources and information related to the $100 million benchmark, which Affiliates can access at http://www.childrensmiraclenetwork.org/remax100million starting March 1st.

Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment!
